The remaining portion (30%) comes from a newer parcel planted specifically for us to clone 174 in 2001. Both locations are decidedly cool climate, however they are sheltered from the wind on slopes of 25 and 20 percent respectively. The soil for both is shallow, decomposed granite, which keeps vine vigor in check and yields low.
Working with a wind-protected site for cool climate Syrah is definitely a balancing act. It is very easy to blow through the ripening curve and lose the classic nuances that are desired. It is equally easy to pick before the requisite expression of fruit has come forward. This site has a unique terroir that yields fascinatingly complex wines, if one is paying careful attention.
The 2005 "Les Violettes" Syrah has intriguing aromas of raspberries, licorice and caramel, and very pure flavors of currents, blackberries and bacon. Quite full-bodied, but still retaining an elegant structure on the palate, classic notes of white pepper and black olives add complexity and authenticity to the fruit. Framed with a dash of caramel and from the barrels, a long finish with moderate tannins completes this California version of a modern Côte Rôtie.
