2012 Syrah - Les Violettes

For the 2009 Les Violettes, all of the Syrah fruit (94%) is sourced from two parcels in Paraiso Vineyard on the southern end of Santa Lucia Highlands. The division between the blocks is about equal, with half from newer parcels planted specifically for us, of clones 174 and 383, in 2001. The other half originates on their 'Wedding Hill' terraces, planted to the Estrella clone in 1991. One specific acre of this block is marked out and reserved for our use each year.

As has been typical of previous vintages, the 2009 Les Violettes also contains Viognier (6%), added as whole clusters co-fermented at the vat, to add dimension and structure.

The vineyard location is decidedly cool climate, however both pieces are sheltered from the wind on slopes of 20 to 25 percent. The soil is shallow, decomposed granite, which keeps vine vigor in check and yields low. The farming practices are certified "sustainable".

The 2009 Les Violettes has lovely aromas and flavors suggesting spiced plums and raspberries, tobacco, white pepper, and tilled soil. A long finish, framed with a shot of vanillin from the barrels around the core fruit and moderate tannins, completes the profile. Medium-bodied but quite intense, and showing good balance on the palate, this wine has excellent aging potential.
